A pregnant woman went to the doctor complaining of stomach pains. The doctor suspected appendicitis and decided to operate, but instead of removing the offending organ the surgeon removed her ovary.

The doctor, who is employed at Blekinge hospital in southern Sweden, has now been warned for the serious mistake by Medical Responsibility Board (Hälso- och sjukvårdens ansvarsnämnd - HSAN), local newspaper Blekinge Läns Tidning reports.

The doctor describes how she was "completely perplexed" when the mistake came to light a couple of days later.

The patient has meanwhile described how she felt "violated".

"It feels really hard to bear, especially if it has affected my chances of becoming pregnant again," she told the newspaper.

It remains unclear what, if anything, was the cause of the woman's stomach pains.
